Wimbledon: Alexander Zverev Ends Fritz Jinx To Reach Maiden Semi-Finals With Dominant Display

The German second seed, fresh from winning the French Open, snapped a run of seven consecutive defeats against the American. The victory also avenged his loss to Fritz at the All England Club in 2024 and kept alive his bid to claim back-to-back Grand Slam titles.

Alexander Zverev ended one of the most frustrating streaks of his career on Wednesday, July 8, defeating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 to secure a place in the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time.

With the win, Zverev became just the fifth German man in the Open Era to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals, joining Boris Becker, Michael Stich, Rainer Schuettler and Tommy Haas.

"It sounds great. I hope to play two more matches here, so we'll see how it goes, but for now I'm extremely happy to be in the semi-finals, especially after beating Taylor, who I hadn't won against in more than two years," Zverev said after the match.

"He's been beating me for two years straight. I played a fantastic match."

Although the matchup had been billed as one of the marquee contests of the quarter-finals, Zverev controlled proceedings for most of the afternoon. He secured an early break in the opening set and withstood pressure from Fritz in the 10th game before serving it out 6-4, celebrating with a roar after overcoming the challenge from an opponent who had dominated their recent meetings.

The second set tilted further in Zverev's favour after Fritz took a medical timeout for his right knee early in the contest. While the American returned to the court, he was unable to maintain the consistency needed to trouble the German, who claimed another decisive break and moved within one set of victory.

Any hopes of a comeback quickly disappeared in the third set.

Zverev highlighted his dominance with a spectacular backhand winner to earn a double break for a 4-1 lead before comfortably serving out the match. It marked the 12th Grand Slam semi-final of his career and his first at Wimbledon.

"I knew I had to play an almost perfect match to have a chance, and I feel like I did that today," Zverev said.

"The first game on my serve, I had three break points against me and I knew it was going to be difficult. It's always in the back of your mind when you haven't beaten someone for more than two years."

Awaiting Zverev in the semi-finals is Britain's Arthur Fery, who continued his impressive run with a straight-sets victory over Flavio Cobolli earlier on Wednesday.

Acknowledging the challenge ahead, Zverev joked that he expected the Wimbledon crowd to throw its support behind the home favourite.

"You guys can all be for Fery," Zverev laughed. "It's totally fine. I understand.

"For him, it's a 'Fery-tale' story. You see what I did there? Very clever. But I have to trust myself and trust my tennis.

"Hopefully I can show a good performance and then we'll see what happens."

Having reached the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time, Zverev now stands two wins away from the title. To continue his run, however, he will have to end Britain's biggest tennis fairytale of the tournament.
