Apple has released an important software update, iOS 18.6, for iPhone users, which fixes over 20 security vulnerabilities that have the potential to expose user data, crash apps, or enable unauthorized access to device functionality.

The update addresses a range of issues, among them a major Accessibility vulnerability in which VoiceOver might inadvertently read out a user's passcode. Another critical bug had to do with the processing of certain audio files, which could be designed to cause memory corruption or instability in the system.

To that end, Apple has fixed eight WebKit-related security vulnerabilities — the Safari and many other apps' browser engine. These vulnerabilities would have allowed attackers access to sensitive information, made browsers crash, or manipulated web content accessible in unauthorized means. Since WebKit is highly integrated within Apple's ecosystem, these fixes are particularly significant.

iOS 18.6 and iPadOS 18.6 are now available for every supported device, such as iPhone 11 and later models, as well as compatible iPads with iPadOS 18. Apple has released iPadOS 17.7.9 for older iPads that do not support iPadOS 18.6, which also contains most of the same necessary fixes.

To update your device, go to Settings > General > Software Update and proceed as instructed. It is suggested by Apple to first backup your data in order to avoid its loss during the update process.

The firm has also released macOS Sequoia 15.6, which resolves more than 80 vulnerabilities. Updates for macOS Sonoma (14.7.7) and macOS Ventura (13.7.7) have also been rolled out to keep legacy Mac models secure. Other platforms like watchOS 11.6, tvOS 18.6, and visionOS 2.6 have also gotten essential security improvements.

As Apple stressed in its official security advisory: “Installing the latest software updates is one of the most important steps users can take to protect their devices and personal information.”
