Nvidia Corp. said it will invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI to aid in building new data centers under what is being called a historic deal to build the world's most advanced AI infrastructure.
According to a statement released on Monday, the two leading AI innovators have signed a letter of intent to deploy 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems for OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure. These systems will be used to train and operate models “on the path to deploying super-intelligence.”
Nvidia and OpenAI have competed and driven each other for 10 years, from the initial DGX supercomputer to ChatGPT's breakthrough," said Jensen Huang, the co-founder and CEO of the world's most valuable chipmaker, in the release.
"This investment and infrastructure collaboration represent the next great leap—using 10 gigawatts to fuel the next intelligence generation.
Bloomberg, in a report citing people familiar with the situation, stated that Nvidia would be awarded equity in OpenAI as part of the deal. The investment would be phased in, with the first $10 billion coming when the first gigawatt of compute is up and running. "Everything starts with compute," OpenAI co-founder and chief executive Sam Altman said in the statement. "Compute infrastructure will be the basis for economy of the future, and we will utilise what we are building with Nvidia to both create new AI breakthroughs…"
The first phase of the collaboration between Nvidia and OpenAI will launch in the latter half of 2026 based on Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform.
At its core, the deal unites OpenAI’s software expertise with Nvidia’s hardware capabilities under a shared AI roadmap. OpenAI will designate Nvidia as a preferred partner for compute and networking to expand its AI production capabilities.
This partnership continues the work OpenAI and Nvidia are already doing with other companies such as Microsoft Corp., Oracle Corp., SoftBank Group Corp., and Stargate, an AI supercomputer. Nvidia has shrewdly used its financial muscle to keep its GPUs at the center of AI work, and keeping OpenAI as a major customer can cement this position.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT serves roughly 700 million users weekly and demands significant computing resources to maintain and expand its offerings. The company has previously faced limits on computing capacity, particularly during new product launches, highlighting the importance of this partnership.
