India has emerged as OpenAI’s second-largest market globally, trailing only the US, and could soon overtake it, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Altman highlighted India’s rapidly expanding AI landscape and emphasized the company’s plans to make artificial intelligence more accessible and affordable for Indian users.
"It's extremely fast-growing, but what people are actually doing with AI, what Indian citizens are actually doing with AI, is just really quite remarkable," he said in releasing GPT‑5, the newest version of the AI technology underpinning ChatGPT.
He added that OpenAI is partnering with local companies to enhance product effectiveness and pricing in India, and reaffirmed plans to travel to the country in September.
In June, OpenAI joined forces with the government-funded IndiaAI initiative to launch its first international expansion of the learning platform, with the goal of scaling AI skills training throughout the country.
The effort, called OpenAI Academy India, aims to increase availability of AI education and tools through tapping into India's active developer community, strong digital infrastructure, and healthy startup ecosystem.
The initiative will back the IndiaAI Mission's FutureSkills program, providing AI training to a broad range of students, developers, educators, civil servants, nonprofit professionals, and small business owners. "India is among the world's most vibrant nations for developing AI, with adoption and innovation driving forward at incredible pace," said Jason Kwon, OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer.
GPT‑5 combines the strengths of ChatGPT into one platform that aims to provide the best possible responses to users at all times.
We are unveiling GPT‑5, our most advanced AI system to date. GPT‑5 is a giant advance in intelligence compared to all our past models with cutting-edge performance in coding, mathematics, writing, health, vision, and more. It is a single system which understands when to answer fast and when to think slower to make expert-level answers," the company added.
The system is open to all users, plus subscribers getting more extended use, and Pro subscribers getting access to GPT‑5 Pro, a version providing sophisticated reasoning for more detailed and accurate responses.
GPT‑5 is one system with a clever, effective question‑answering model, a more thoughtful reasoning model (GPT‑5 thinking) for more challenging problems, and a real‑time router that makes the decision fast, depending on conversation type, difficulty, tool requirements, and your overt intent," OpenAI furthered.
