Highlighting that the international community yearns for an early end to the war in Ukraine, India on Saturday welcomed US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin's Summit in Alaska, appreciating their leadership in seeking peace.
"India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their initiative in the quest for peace is greatly appreciated. India welcomes the advancement made in the Summit. The path forward can only be through diplomacy and dialogue. The world looks forward to an early resolution of the conflict in Ukraine," said Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in a formal statement.
The negotiations were held at the Arctic Warrior Convention Centre early on Saturday, Indian time, and were attended by top officials such as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and US President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Though both leaders indicated progress at the three-hour meeting, taking steps toward a possible end to the war in Ukraine, they did not declare an immediate ceasefire.
"It's not a done deal at all," Trump said to Fox News after the summit. "And Ukraine has to agree. President [Volodymyr] Zelensky has to agree."
He further stated, "We had a very good meeting today, and I think a lot of points were negotiated on behalf of Ukraine."
Before that, on August 9, India had also appreciated the scheduled summit between the leaders of the US and Russia.
"India welcomes the agreement on understanding arrived between the United States of America and the Russian Federation for a summit in Alaska on 15th August 2025. The summit has the potential to end the current war in Ukraine and make the doors of peace ajar. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated on many occasions, 'This is not an era of war'," Jaiswal had mentioned.
The MEA also reaffirmed India's backing for the summit and stated that New Delhi "stands ready" to help with these efforts.
Before the summit, on August 8, President Putin phoned Prime Minister Narendra Modi to brief him on developments and future discussions.
"In the light of the privileged special partnership between Russia and India, Vladimir Putin told the main results of his meeting with US President's Special Envoy Steven Witkoff on August 6 in Moscow. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the President of Russia for the report and reaffirmed India's unshakable position in support of resolving the situation around Ukraine through political and diplomatic ways. Besides, Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi also discussed major bilateral issues, such as cooperation in trade, economy, and investment," a Kremlin statement was read after the phone call.
