IndiGo Plane’s Tail Scrapes Runway During Landing at Mumbai Airport

Go-arounds are routine safety procedures when pilots opt out of trying to land when conditions are unfavourable.

An IndiGo Airbus A321 plane made a brief tail contact with the runway during a low-altitude go-around in poor weather at Mumbai on Saturday, the airline has confirmed.

"On August 16, 2025, the tail of an IndiGo Airbus A321 aircraft skimmed the runway after conducting a low-altitude go-around due to inclement weather in Mumbai. Subsequently, the plane conducted a second approach and landed successfully," an IndiGo spokesperson stated in a release.

The airline further stated that the plane would be subjected to all necessary checks and would be cleared by the regulator prior to resumption of service.

"At IndiGo, we put the safety of our customers, crew, and aircraft at the highest level. We are doing everything to contain any resulting effect on our operations from this mishap," the spokesperson added.

This occurs just a few days after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) served IndiGo with a show-cause notice for training some 1,700 pilots to fly at three high-risk airports with simulators that were not specifically approved for those airfields.

The notice pointed out that IndiGo had used unqualified simulators to train flight commanders and first officers for Category C (critical) airports.

A review of IndiGo's simulator training records indicated that some Full Flight Simulators utilised for training, testing, or airport evaluation purposes at airports like Kozhikode, Leh, and Kathmandu were not approved or certified for respective airport models, in contravention of Civil Aviation Rules (CAR), the DGCA added.

By not making a guarantee that training for Class III critical airports was carried out on fully qualified simulators, IndiGo was found to have violated CAR provisions, the notice stated.
