External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called for increased solidarity between Global South countries, rededication to multilateralism, and a collective effort in reshaping the United Nations and other international organisations.
He made these observations on Tuesday at a High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Group of Global South countries, which took place on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Sharing at the meeting on X, Jaishankar said that in the face of a rise of international challenges and varied risks, "it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions."
The minister set out a mapped-out plan for how Global South nations can engage proactively in global affairs, with five main proposals to bolster the joint voice and role of developing countries.
He emphasized using existing platforms to build consultations among Global South nations, with an intention to "increase solidarity and foster cooperation."
Jaishankar also urged a complete reform of the UN and "multilateralism as a whole."
He emphasized the fact that the Global South needs to present its distinguishing strengths, experiences, and achievements on the global platform to be of use to other countries, using examples like "vaccines, digital capacities, education potentialities, agro-practices and SME (Small and Medium Enterprises)."
Highlighting a balanced response to the issues of the world, he mentioned that in realms such as climate action and climate justice, the Global South must champion programs that are of interest to it, instead of following the interests of the Global North.
He further highlighted the need for taking part in conversations around technologies of the future, specifically artificial intelligence, so that the developing world would not be left behind in the evolving world order.
India has consistently advocated for the Global South’s voice in international forums and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that developing countries have a meaningful role in shaping the global agenda.
