India remained hopeful on Tuesday about the current trade talks with America, terming its talks with US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch as "positive and forward looking."
"It was decided to intensify efforts to achieve early conclusion of a mutually beneficial Trade Agreement," the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.
"A team of officials from the office of United States Trade Representative led by Chief Negotiator, India US Bilateral Trade Agreement negotiations Mr.Brendan Lynch visited India on September 16, 2025. They held discussions with officials from Department of Commerce, led by Special Secretary, Department of Commerce on India-US trade ties including on the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement," the statement said.
"Acknowledging the enduring importance of bilateral trade between India and the US, the discussions were positive and forward looking covering various aspects of the trade deal," it added.
This was the first face-to-face interaction between the two nations' trade representatives since the Donald Trump government levied 50% tariff on Indian exports.
The US delegation was led by Lynch on Tuesday as the bilateral trade negotiations resumed. The US embassy spokesperson, as cited by ANI, said that Lynch held a productive meeting in Delhi with his counterpart, Rajesh Agrawal, the Special Secretary at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, to discuss the way forward in negotiations.
A government spokesman testified that both countries' chief negotiators centered on negotiating solutions to challenges brought about by the elevated tariff structure, which has created uncertainty among exporters.
The visit is a follow-up to an earlier planned US trade delegation visit to India from August 25-29 for the sixth round of Bilateral Trade Agreement talks, which had been put on hold after the US imposed the 50% tariffs, including the 25% penalty on Russian oil purchase.
India and the US have maintained weekly virtual meetings ever since, aligning with Trump's new conciliatory policy towards India-US relations, which has been embraced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
