Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday stated that the war in Ukraine would not have occurred if Donald Trump had been U.S. President in 2022.
After meeting Trump in Alaska, Putin expressed gratitude to him for his cooperation and the "friendly tone of conversation." He acknowledged that U.S.-Russia relations had experienced a challenging time and underlined the necessity to "rectify the situation."
The Russian president expressed hope that the agreements achieved during the negotiations could become a starting point for settling the conflict in Ukraine and restoring relations between Washington and Moscow. He already assured that their next meeting would take place in Moscow, warning at the same time that Ukraine and Europe should not try to "sabotage" the progress made in Alaska. Putin also voiced hope that "mutual understanding" with Trump could lead to peace in Ukraine, and noted that Russia remained "sincerely interested" in ending the war.
Simultaneously, Putin emphasized that a final solution would entail the resolution of the root causes of the conflict and making sure all concerns of Russia were taken into consideration.
