US President Donald Trump has claimed he was targeted by "three very sinister events" while making his appearance at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) last week, with the Secret Service now to investigate the incidents.
In his speech to world leaders, Trump severely criticised the UN for "wasting its potential," blamed European countries for mismanaging the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and claimed that their migration policies were taking nations "to hell."
On Wednesday (local time), Trump went on his Truth Social platform, implying that a number of gaffes that befell him at the UN were not random but rather part of an otherwise carefully planned strategy.
As explained by Trump, the initial problem occurred when an escalator carrying him and his group suddenly "screech[ed] to a halt." He dubbed the episode as "absolutely sabotage" and called for answers.
"The people that did it should be arrested," he tweeted.
The second disruption occurred mid-way through his UN address when his teleprompter went "stone cold dark." Trump alluded to tampering, although a UN official—talking anonymously for the sensitivity of the matter—explained that how the device worked was handled by White House staff.
The third issue, he asserted, was an audio malfunction within the assembly hall. Trump explained his statements were only heard via interpreter earpieces and that his wife, Melania, could not hear him whatsoever.
"This wasn’t a coincidence, this was triple sabotage," Trump said, continuing to insist the glitches were deliberate.
He also called on the UN to protect security camera footage of the escalator accident and added the Secret Service would be investigating.
