U.S. President Donald Trump hasn't made up his mind on whether to impose tariffs on China for buying Russian oil, as the country's overall relationship with Beijing comprises "many things that have nothing to do with the Russian situation," U.S. Vice-President J.D. Vance said.
Appearing on Fox News Sunday on August 10, 2025, Mr. Vance clarified, "Well, the President said he's considering it, but he has made no final decisions."
His comments followed a question on whether Washington would impose similar trade sanctions on China following Mr. Trump's recent announcement of heavy tariffs on countries like India for buying Russian oil.
"Certainly the China situation is a bit more complex because our relationship with China, it impacts a lot of other things that have no relation to the Russian situation," Mr. Vance said, adding that the President is "considering his options" and will take action "when he decides."
America has already increased the import tariffs on India quite substantially. A 25% retaliatory tariff was initially imposed earlier, followed by an additional 25% charge announced last week, doubling duties to 50%—one of the highest levied by Washington on any nation. The new duty will go into effect on August 27.
New Delhi termed the extra tariff as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable." In a statement, India's External Affairs Ministry stated it was "extremely unfortunate that the U.S. should decide to impose additional tariffs on India," saying that the government will do everything possible to protect the interests of the country.
