'Viable Path to Long-Term Peace': PM Modi hails Trump's Gaza peace plan

In an X post, the Prime Minister also hoped that "all concerned will come together behind President Trump's initiative and support this effort to end conflict and secure peace".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday greeted US President Donald Trump's 20-point strategy to bring an end to the conflict in Gaza as a "viable pathway to long term and sustainable peace, security and development" in the area.

In an X post, the Prime Minister also hoped that "all concerned will come together behind President Trump's initiative and support this effort to end conflict and secure peace".

The White House released the 20-point proposal on Monday, which calls for an immediate ceasefire, a hostage exchange of Hamas-held hostages for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody, phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, disarmament of Hamas, and the creation of a transitional government under international supervision.

The plan was announced after Trump hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a meeting at the Oval Office, Netanyahu's fourth White House visit since Trump's inauguration in January this year.

Addressing Netanyahu, Trump said they were close to sealing a deal but cautioned that Israel would have "full US support" to act if Hamas rejected the proposal.

Netanyahu, while lauding Trump as a friend to Israel, also indicated some ambivalence regarding aspects of the US leader's offer, including overhauls anticipated from the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority and the possibilities for eventual Palestinian statehood.

Hamas said it had not yet seen Trump's proposal, whereas the Palestinian Authority welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed its readiness to work with the US and its allies to attain a comprehensive deal, WAFA news agency reported.

During last week's UN General Assembly, the US laid out a 21-point Middle East peace plan to bring an end to the nearly two-year Gaza war. The plan demanded the repatriation of all hostages, dead and alive, a stop to Israeli aggression against Qatar, and renewed negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians toward "peaceful coexistence.".

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the plan, praised Trump's "leadership," and reiterated that Islamabad would endorse a two-state solution.

"It is also my firm belief that President Trump is fully prepared to assist in whatever way necessary to make this extremely important and urgent understanding to become a reality," he tweeted.

In a common statement, the Saudi Arabia, Jordan, UAE, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Qatar, and Egypt foreign ministers commended Trump's "leadership and genuine efforts" and supported the plan as a path to stop the war, rebuild Gaza, and thwart Israeli annexation of the West Bank.

French President Emmanuel Macron called the plan "an important opportunity to conclude the war and liberate hostages," while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the proposal "could be a turning point, allowing for a permanent end to hostilities, immediate release of all hostages, and full and secure humanitarian access.".

In the meantime, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called upon "all sides to unite and work with the US administration to conclude this agreement and bring it into being."

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul indicated that the plan brings hope to hundreds of thousands who suffer in Gaza and emphasized that the chance should not be lost, appealing to Hamas to grasp it.
