US President Donald Trump has excluded any trade negotiations with India until the current tariff row is resolved, after his administration doubled duties on Indian imports.

Wednesday saw the White House sign an Executive Order that increased current tariffs on Indian products by 25 percentage points, which put the total tax up to 50%. The administration invoked national security and foreign policy interests, naming India's ongoing importation of Russian oil as particular evidence.

The order claims such imports—be they purchased directly or indirectly through intermediaries—constitute an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United States, justifying emergency economic action.

The US officials indicate that the 25% tariff that was first imposed came into effect on 7 August. In 21 days, the other 25% will apply to all products from India entering US ports, excluding products already in transport and particular categories that are exempted. The legislation also provides for the ability to adjust the tariffs according to geopolitical events or retaliatory action by India or other nations.
In a address to the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Narendra Modi stated categorically that India would not yield to economic pressure:

"For us, the interest of farmers is our first priority. India will never compromise on the interests of dairy farmers, fishermen and farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am prepared for it. India is prepared for it."

India has long resisted the opening of vulnerable sectors such as agriculture and dairy to global competition on the grounds that it will threaten millions of rural livelihoods.

The standoff represents a sharp intensification of India–US trade tensions, as both countries remained firm on issues of economic policy and national interest. The standoff occurs against the backdrop of a wider global scenario of escalating tariffs and trade barriers.
