Omicron scare: Christmas, New Year celebrations banned in Delhi

"As per the DDMA order, all social, political, sports, entertainment, cultural, religious, and festival related gathering and congregations are completely prohibited in Delhi," the DDMA order read. The DDMA has directed all the district magistrates and DCPs to ensure that no cultural events, gatherings or congregations take place for celebrating Christmas or New Year in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public, Grievances, Law and Justice headed by BJP's Sushil Kumar Modi on Tuesday held a scheduled meeting on the ‘Status of Common Electoral Roll for conducting elections in the country'. It should be recalled that the issue of the common electoral roll was first discussed in 2002 when Justice M N Venkatachaliah,  who headed the National Commission to review the working of the Constitution, recommended a common electoral roll for elections to Panchayati raj institutions, state assembly, and Parliament.

The new act  would allow electoral registration officers to seek the Aadhaar numbers of people registering as voters. The Bill had been passed by Lok Sabha on Monday.  The new act aims to ensure that electoral rolls in the country stay genuine. According to Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, the linking of Aadhaar and voter ID cards will be "voluntary and not compulsory". He told NDTV that even if a citizen does not have an Aadhaar card, his name will not be deleted from electoral rolls
Govt deliberately suspended MPs to pass Bill: Kharge

On Tuesday, the House suspended Trinamool Congress MP Derek O' Brien. Kharge said, "The government wanted to pass the Bills easily so it deliberately suspended the 12 MPs. We had requested the government to revoke the suspension a number of times so that the House could run smoothly but they refused to do so."
UP to be self-reliant in oxygen production soon

Over 550 oxygen plants have been operationalised in the state while another 10 are expected to become functional soon. A government spokesperson said, "The government had sanctioned 561 oxygen plants when the demand for medical oxygen had surged sharply at the peak of the second Covid-19 wave in April and May to ensure that there is adequate supply in case of another wave, and even otherwise to meet any kind of medical emergency.
Over 200 Omicron cases in India: Centre asks states to 'activate war rooms', night curfews'

The Union government has pointed out  that the Omicron variant is three times more transmissible than Delta and therefore,  has asked the states/UT governments to "activate war rooms", impose night curfews, boost vaccination, and keep analyzing trends and surges. In the letter, the ministry has mentioned a series of prevention and containment measures to be taken to curb the virus. Currently the country has registered over 200 cases of Omicron variant.
Delhi sees one Covid death, 102 fresh infections

In the last 24 hours, one Covid related death has also been reported, taking the total tally at 25,102. With the new cases, the city's cumulative tally has climbed to 14,42,390. The number of active cases has also climbed to 557 with Covid infection rate at 0.2 per cent. With 75 patients recovering in the last 24 hours, the total number of recoveries is 14,16,731. A total of 262 Covid patients are being treated in home isolation at present.
Mayor for KMC to be decided on Dec 23: Mamata

Speaking to the media persons at the airport before leaving for Assam on a two-day tour, the Chief Minister said: "All the winning candidates will be present at Maharashtra Bhawan on December 23. On that day, the KMC mayor and the board will be formed." Though the party is yet to finalise any name, there are strong indications that the Chief Minister wants to rest on Firhad Hakim again.
