At 27,176 new cases, India's daily tally below 30K in last 4 days
However, the daily Covid tally in the country remained below 30,000 for the last four days, according to the Union Health Ministry's report on Wednesday. A total of 25,404 new cases were registered on Tuesday, 27,254 on Monday and 28,591 on Sunday. With 284 new fatalities registered in the last 24 hours, the country's total Covid death toll increased to 4,43 497. The fatality rate has remained at 1.33 per cent for the last few days.

A bench of Justices L. Nageswara Rao and B.R. Gavai declined to reopen the debate whether a life sentence should be treated as rigorous imprisonment for life. "In view of the authoritative pronouncements of this court on the issues that arise for consideration in these SLPs, there is no need to re-examine the limited point for which notice was issued. Therefore, the Special Leave Petitions are dismissed," it said.

PM chairs meeting of council of ministers, says learn best practices from colleagues
Sources said that at the first physical meeting of the council of ministers after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, various issues were discussed. "The meeting lasted for over four hours," sources said. The meeting was held at the auditorium of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. "At the meeting, the Prime Minister asked the ministers to learn the best practices of their colleagues. Referring to late Union minister Manohar Parrikar, the Prime Minister said that simplicity is a way of life," sources said.

A bench, headed by Justices L Nageswara Rao and comprising justices Sanjiv Khanna and B R Gavai said: "We are making it very clear that we are not going to reopen Nagraj or Jarnail Singh (cases)." It pointed out that the idea was only to decide these cases in accordance with the law laid down by the top court.
