India reports 1.96L Covid cases, lowest since April 14

On April 14, India had recorded 2,00,739 cases. This is for the first time after April 14 that the cases have gone below two-lakh mark. On Monday, India crossed three-lakh mark of fatalities due to the coronavirus infections, thus becoming world's third country after the US and Brazil to cross three-lakh deaths.
Rahul urges party workers to help those affected by Yaas

"Cyclone Yaas is moving towards Bengal and Odisha from the Bay of Bengal. I appeal to Congress workers to provide all assistance ensuring safety of those affected. Please follow all precautionary measures," he said in a tweet. According to sources familiar with the development, Jaiswal, a former Maharashtra DGP, is among the finalised candidates for the post of the CBI chief. The source said that his name can be announced soon. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Naremdra Modi chaired a meeting with the Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to select the new CBI chief.

Congress opposes selection process of new CBI chief

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday evening discussed the names for the new CBI chief with Chowdhury and the Chief Justice of India, N.V. Ramana. "I was given 109 names on May 11, and today afternoon it was 10 and by the time the meeting began, it came down to six names," Chowdhury said in a dissent note, according to sources, adding that the approach of the DoPT is "highly objectionable".

Delhi reports 1,550 new Covid cases, positivity rate below 3%

While the daily positivity rate increased slightly to 2.52 per cent from 2.42 per cent on Sunday, the national capital's cumulative positivity rate stood at 7.55 per cent. The new cases on Monday took the national capital's overall Covid tally to 14,18,418, according to the bulletin. The city had reported 1,649 new cases on Sunday, 2,260 on Saturday, 3,009 on Friday, 3,231 on Thursday, 3,846 on Wednesday and 4,482 on Tuesday.
National database of unorganised sector workers a must, says SC

A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and M.R. Shah said: "We are of the view that process which has been initiated by Ministry of Labour and Employment for creating a national database for unorganised workers, should be completed with collaboration and coordination of the states, which may serve registration for extending different schemes by the states and Centre."
Cyclone 'Yaas' may impact three northeastern states

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a tweet, said : "Cyclone 'YAAS' is likely to affect the (northeastern) region on 26-27 May. Meeting to discuss new CBI chief ends, Hitesh Chandra Awasthi emerges as front-runner

The three members of the Select Committee discussed several names for the top CBI post for a fixed term of two years. The meeting started around at 6 p.m. and lasted for over 90 minutes at the Prime Minister's residence here. Awasthi was appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Uttar Pradesh in March last year.
