Kylian Mbappe once again scored for Real Madrid as they won 3-0 against Real Oviedo in La Liga on Sunday.

For Oviedo, their return to Spain's top flight for almost 25 years, playing the 15-time European champions was a high-profile game, with Asturian fans making the atmosphere vibrant.

The match-winners were Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. Mbappe scored twice and the Brazilian added a late third to wrap up the win.

Manager Xabi Alonso made a couple of key changes to his starting XI from Madrid's 1-0 victory over Osasuna, resting Vinicius and Trent Alexander-Arnold for Rodrygo Goes and club captain Dani Carvajal, who was coming back from injury.

Vinicius, having been dropped at first, made his mark with a goal and an assist during his half-hour on the field.

"It was a very mature, very mature match," Alonso replied. "With and without the ball. Playing as a team. And Vini came on and had a part in those two goals that brought us tranquility. There will be matches for all of them. Decisions are made thinking about the team, and that's how it was today."

Another significant inclusion saw 18-year-old Argentine Franco Mastantuono start his first full match. The young player demonstrated his blistering dribbling early in the game, beating two defenders before entering the Oviedo box and gesturing to the referee after he went down.

Oviedo did come close to having an attacking chance when Leander Dendoncker tried a chipped effort in the 23rd minute, but goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois easily gathered the ball.

Madrid came close to breaking through when Arda Guler's shot from within the box was saved by Oviedo goalkeeper Aaron Escandell. The Turkish international also set up Mbappe's opener after 37 minutes, playing a pass into the feet of the Frenchman, who turned and shot past Escandell.

The goal occasioned protests from Oviedo, with Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni having what looked like followed through on Dendoncker when he regained possession.

Just past the hour, Rodrygo and Mastantuono were substituted by Vinicius and Brahim Diaz. Diaz had created a scoring opportunity for Fede Valverde within an instant, only for Escandell to pull off a fingertip save.

Kwasi Sibo was inches from setting Oviedo's fans alight as his shot bounced off the post in the 81st minute with Courtois immobile. But Madrid quickly hit back. Vinicius picked up the loose ball two minutes later, surged downfield, and played a disguised pass to Mbappe, who completed first time.

Vinicius scored the third goal in the 93rd minute, sliding the ball home after a composed finish was played in by Diaz to find him in space.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Villarreal thumped Girona 5-0 at home, with Tajon Buchanan scoring a hat-trick in his league debut as he joins the team as a new signing.

Girona, who took part in last season's Champions League, began the season with a second consecutive loss and are still at the foot of the table, having shipped seven without scoring.

“When you don’t compete at 100 percent, a team of Villarreal’s calibre will run you over,” Girona coach Michel Sanchez said. “That’s what happened. We play for the pride and respect of the people and we didn’t do the job we should have done.”

Villarreal surged to a 4-0 lead within the first 30 minutes, with Nicolas Pepe and Rafa Marin scoring, while Buchanan added two goals. The Canadian completed his hat-trick four minutes after the hour mark, capping a dazzling display.

Real Sociedad reversed the 2-0 halftime deficit to earn a draw with Espanyol. Pere Milla and Javi Puado had put the Catalans ahead before Ander Barrenetxea and Orri Oskarsson reversed the scores within eight minutes in the second half.
