Brazilian football sensation Neymar was left sobbing after going through the worst defeat of his professional career. In the current Brazilian Serie A, his Santos side lost 0-6 to Vasco Da Gama on Sunday, with ex-Liverpool striker Phil Coutinho scoring two goals.
Santos sacked coach Cléber Xavier after the humiliating defeat.
Lucas Piton got the scoring underway, before Coutinho doubled the advantage in the second half to take it to 3-0. David Correa De Fonseca, Rayan, and Danilo Neves netted more goals to seal Vasco Da Gama's one-sided performance, much to the relief of boosting the team out of the relegation zone.
After the match, Neymar expressed deep shame over the team’s display and acknowledged fans’ frustration. “I’m ashamed. I’m totally disappointed with our performance. The fans have every right to protest, obviously without using violence … But if they want to curse and insult, they’re in their right,” he said.
He went on to say, "It's a sense of utter shame. I've never felt this in my life. Unfortunately, it did happen. The tears were from anger, from everything. Unfortunately, I can't help out in every manner. Anyway, it was complete s—, that's the reality."
Neymar was consoled by the support team and Vasco Da Gama coach Fernando Diniz as he limped out of the field, while spectators expressed their displeasure by turning their backs in the last minutes.
Coming as an additional setback for Santos, Neymar was also given a yellow card during the game, his third of the season, which will cause him to miss the next match against Bahia.
The demoralizing defeat leaves Santos two points clear of the relegation zone, and serious doubts have been raised over their ability to survive the league.
