India reports 2,503 new Covid cases, lowest in 680 days

In a significant development, India reported only 2,503 new cases in the last 24 hours, the lowest single-day spike in 680 days, the Union Health Ministry announced on Monday. In the same period, 27 people also succumbed to the virus, taking the overall death toll to 5,15,877. The number of active cases also further reduced to 36,168, the lowest in 675 days.
Indian student fighting Russians in Ukraine wants to return, says family

R. Sainikesh's family who lives in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore, has told media that they had found he wanted to return when they talked to him. In 2018, Sainikesh joined the National Aerospace University in Kharkiv and since then he had been there. Following the fighting, he had joined the Georgian National Legion, to fight against the Russians. As his father Ravichandran asked what he was doing in war-torn country and why he was not coming back, Sainikesh said that he wished to be back in his country and stay with him family.
Second part of the Budget session 2022 resumes on Monday

The second part of the Budget session will resume on Monday and will last until April 8, 2022. The House will sit from 11 a.m. till 6 p.m. during the scheduled 19 sittings whereas it sat from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. during the first part of the Budget session due to Covid-19 protocols during the first part of the Budget session. The Rajya Sabha is likely to get over 64 hours to transact the legislative business besides taking up the issues of public importance during this part of the session.

Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, and Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister P.K. Mishra attended the high-level meeting.
PM directs to bring mortal remains of Naveen killed in Ukraine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday directed the authorities to make all possible efforts to bring back the mortal remains of Naveen Shekharappa, who died in Kharkiv, Ukraine during Russian shelling on March 1. The Prime Minister earlier in the day chaired a CCS meeting to review India's security preparedness, and the prevailing global scenario in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Prime Minister was briefed on latest developments and different aspects of India's security preparedness in the border areas as well as in the maritime and air domain.

An Army Cheetah helicopter had crashed on Friday in Baraub area of Gurez in Bandipora district, while on a routine mission to evacuate an ailing soldier from a forward post.
Sanctions against Russia may offer opportunities for India's space sector

The US and Europe's economic sanctions against Russia for its military action against Ukraine may throw up economic opportunities for the Indian space sector, instead of burdening it with economic cost, say industry experts. They also feel that to cash on the opportunities, India should accelerate its satellite launch capabilities, and announce productivity-linked incentive (PLI) schemes for the aerospace sector.
4 terrorists killed in 3 Kashmir encounters

Of the four terrorists, two were killed in Pulwama, and one each in Handwara and Ganderbal. According to the authorities, two terrorists belonged to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror outfit and the two others were from Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). Meanwhile, security forces managed to capture one terrorist.
Study claiming Covid mortality higher than official count speculative, misinformed: Health Ministry

The recently published study has provided estimates of all cause excess mortality for a number of countries based on a mathematical modelling exercise. The study has concluded that although the reported Covid-19 deaths between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2021, totalled 5.94 million worldwide, but an estimated 18.2 million died worldwide.
