Manmohan to head Congress panel on 75 yrs of Independence celebrations
In a statement, Congress said: "The committee will plan and coordinate the one-year long celebration of 75th anniversary of Independence." The other members of the committee are A.K. Antony, Meira Kumar, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ambika Soni, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Pramod Tiwari, M. Ramchandran, K.R. Ramesh Kumar, Pradyut Bordoloi, and Mukul Wasnik has been made Convenor.
Allahabad HC asks govt to declare cow national animal
The court said on Wednesday that when the country's culture and its faith get hurt, the country becomes weak. The court made this observation while denying bail to Javed who had been accused of cow slaughter. In his 12-page judgement, Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav noted that the applicant had, after committing theft of the cow, killed it, beheaded it and also kept its meat. "This is not the first offence of the applicant. Earlier also, he had committed cow slaughter which had disturbed the harmony of the society.
Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani passes away
Geelani was the senior most separatist leader in the Valley who was known for his hardline views. Family sources said that he passed away late on Wednesday evening at his uptown Hyderpora residence in Srinagar.
Born in 1929, Geelani was an elected member of the J&K legislative assembly, representing the Sopore constituency in north Kashmir in 1972, 1977 and 1987. He was a member of the Jamaat-e-Islami and later founded his own party called the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.
AIIMS staff to go on indefinite strike from Oct 25
Presidents of all three Unions - ANU's Harish Kajla, KU's Satyaprakash Kalia, and OA's Ajit Singh - submitted a joint memorandum to the AIIMS Director informing about the indefinite strike to be commenced from October 25. In a joint statement, the union Presidents said that they have had numerous meetings with the administration but the demands are still pending.

Indian Army to participate in 17-nation war game in Russia
The Indian Army's 200 personnel contingent will carry out war games with 16 other countries in the drill, known as Zapad 2021. One of the theatre-level exercises of Russian Armed Forces, it will focus primarily on operations against terrorists. "Over a dozen countries from Eurasian and South Asian Region will participate in this signature event," the Indian Army said.

Heavy rains turn Delhi's roads, markets into flood zones
The roads outside the US Embassy in Chanakyapuri, Inner circle of Connaught Place, the road below the Minto Bridge and several other areas across Delhi were flooded resulting in obstruction to vehicular movement. As safety measures, traffic police had closed both carriageways of the road below Minto Bridge for few hours and diverted traffic movement from Connaught Place towards Barakhamba Road.
Heavy rainfall in Delhi-NCR, IMD issues orange alert
For the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m., Lodhi Road observatory recorded 120.2 mm rainfall while Safdarjung recorded 112.1 mm rainfall even as the IMD issued an orange alert for Wednesday. The other stations too recorded heavy rainfall with Palam counting 71.1 mm, Ridge 81.6 mm while Aya Nagar recorded 68.2 mm rainfall, IMD said.
