We will see: SC on plea challenging Rakesh Asthana's appointment

The plea moved by advocate M.L. Sharma said Asthana's appointment to the post came just days before his superannuation on July 31, as a result he will have a tenure of one year as Delhi Police chief. On Tuesday, Sharma mentioned the petition before a bench comprising Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and Justice Surya Kant. Justice Ramana said: "Let us see if it is numbered. Let the petition be numbered first. We will see".
Mere harassment won't amount to abetment of suicide: SC

A bench comprising justices L. Nageswara Rao and Aniruddha Bose said: "Mere harassment without any positive action on the part of the accused proximate to the time of occurrence which led to the suicide would not amount to an offence under Section 306 IPC. Abetment by a person is when a person instigates another to do something".
Mizoram blames Assam for continuing economic blockade

"All transporters in Guwahati operating in Mizoram have been instructed to stop transporting any goods into Mizoram... this has resulted in a complete halt of goods including essential medical supplies coming into Mizoram," Dr R. Thangliana wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting urgent action to end the blockade. Militants kill 2 BSF jawans in Tripura, loot arms

A police official in Agartala said that during patrolling, the suspected National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants attacked the BSF troopers at Manikpur tribal village leading to a fierce encounter in which two para-military personnel were killed on the spot. The martyred BSF men include sub-inspector Bhuru Singh and constable Raj Kumar.

India sees dip in Covid infections, logs 30,549 new cases

India is registering less than 50,000 daily new cases for 37 continuous days and saw a decline of 10,585 cases from Monday when India recorded 41,134 fresh cases of Covid-19 and 424 fatalities. With massive vaccination drive and government's preventive approach towards the pandemic, India continues to report decline in both daily new cases and the daily death tolls.

Pak terrorist killed in Kashmir encounter

A top police official told IANS, "On 23/24 July an operation was carried out at the Shokbaba forest area in which three terrorists were killed, including one Pakistani terrorist. "Last night information about his presence in village Chhadajji was received and an operation was launched during the course of which a Pakistani terrorist Babar Ali of Ugada district of Pakistan's Punjab has been killed."
Gunfight breaks out in J&K's Bandipora

"Encounter has started at Chandaji area of Bandipora. Police and security forces are on the job," police said. The gunfight took place after a joint team of the police and the army cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. As the security forces zeroed in on the spot where the terrorists were hiding they came under a heavy volume of fire that triggered the encounter.
