Time-bound call on defection: Only parliament can frame laws, says SC
A bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana made this observation during a hearing of a plea seeking directions to the Centre to lay down the strict time frame for Speakers of Lok Sabha and state Assemblies and chairperson of Rajya Sabha to decide disqualification petitions filed against MPs/ MLA for defection to other parties.
Lashkar militant held for Darbhanga blast visited Pakistan
The NIA investigations revealed that Nasir Khan had visited Pakistan in 2012 and had received training from handlers of LeT in fabrication of IED from locally available chemicals. No one was injured in the explosion in a parcel on platform 1 of Darbhanga Railway Station. The parcel was booked at Secunderabad and had arrived Secunderabad-Darbhanga Express.
Expect severe heat wave in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan for a week
On Thursday, the maximum temperature will hover around 42 degrees Celsius in Delhi, the IMD said. A day after the 'severe heat wave' gripped the city with mercury rising to 43.5 degrees Celsius, seven notches above the normal and the highest this year, the IMD said the minimum temperature registered on Thursday morning at 31.7 degrees was also four notches above normal.
India logs 1,005 deaths as new cases stay below 50K
On June 30, India recorded 817 fatalities due to the coronavirus, lowest since April 10. The death figures have crossed 1,000 mark once again after three days. This is the 13th consecutive day in the last two months when the toll has been below the 2,000-mark. The total caseload rose to 3,04,11,634 after India crossed the three crore mark last week.

NIA arrests SDPI member in 2020 Bengaluru riots case
An NIA spokesperson said that Abbas, a resident of Bengaluru, was arrested for his involvement in the conspiracy and rioting on August 11 last year at K.G. Halli police station area, after it was found that he heads the SDPI in the Nagawara ward. Abbas was produced before a special NIA court in Bengaluru, which sent him to six days NIA custody.

Delivering the 17th Justice P.D. Desai memorial lecture on 'Rule of Law', Chief Justice Ramana said: "The judiciary cannot be controlled, directly or indirectly, by the legislature or the executive, or else the Rule of Law would become illusory. At the same time, judges should not be swayed by the emotional pitch of public opinion either, which is getting amplified through social media platforms."
India's COVID-19 vax coverage increases to 33.28 crore
India's cumulative vaccination coverage had crossed 33 crore on Tuesday. A total of 33,28,54,527 vaccine doses have been administered through 44,33,853 sessions, as per the provisional report till 7 a.m. Wednesday while 36,51,983 vaccine doses were administered in the last 24 hours. India has reported 45,951 new cases in the last 24 hours.
Sidhu finally meets Rahul Gandhi
The meeting lasted for an hour but Sidhu, who had tweeted his photo with Priyanka Gandhi, was tight-lipped about what transpired, and neither did the Congress make an official statement. Sources, however, that a solution is being worked on to defuse the tension between the two factions.
