India ranked fourth most powerful country in Asia
India is ranked as a middle power in Asia. As the fourth most powerful country in Asia, India again falls short of the major power threshold in 2021. Its overall score declined by two points compared to 2020. India is one of eighteen countries in the region to trend downward in its overall score in 2021, the report said. The country performs best in the future resources measure, where it finishes behind only the US and China. However, lost growth potential for Asia's third largest economy due largely to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic has led to a diminished economic forecast for 2030, Lowy Institute said.
Delhi reports 1st Omicron case, patient has travel history from Tanzania
With the first case in Delhi, the total cases of Omicron variant has climbed to five in India. The first two cases of Omicron variant were reported from Karnataka. The third and the fourth cases were found in Gujarat and Maharashtra respectively on Saturday. Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain said on Sunday that the results of 12 samples, which were sent for genome sequencing, have come out. Out of the total 12, only one has been confirmed for the Omicron variant. The other 11 have tested positive for normal Covid.
India sees 1-day rise of 2,796 deaths, new Covid cases at 8,895
The recovery of 6,918 patients in the last 24 hours has increased the cumulative tally to 3,40,60,774. Consequently, India's recovery rate stands at 98.35 per cent, highest since March 2020. India's Active Caseload presently stands at 99,155. Active cases constitute 0.29% of the country's total Positive Cases, which is lowest since March 2020. Also in the same period, a total of 12,26,064 tests were conducted across the country. India has so far conducted over 64.72 crore cumulative tests.
HM Amit Shah condemns Nagaland killings, assures thorough probe
Anguished over an unfortunate incident, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, "I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives." He said a high-level Special Investigation Team has been constituted by the state government and it will "thoroughly probe this incident to ensure justice to the bereaved families." A security force jawan was also killed in the incident.
Several killed in Nagaland in case of 'mistaken identity'
Initial report states that the security forces acting on a tip off, had planned an ambush on the Tiru-Oting road but mistook the villagers to be insurgents. As villagers were killed in the firing in a case of mistaken identity, the locals surrounded the security forces who again fired in self-defence.
West Bengal CM Mamata to attend event in Kathmandu pending Centre's clearance
CM Mamata Banerjee recently received an invitation to address a gathering in Kathmandu on December 11. Sources in the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) confirmed that Banerjee is interested to go to Kathmandu and has informed the organisers of the event, but she needs to get clearance from the Central government. The state government is writing to the Centre to allow her to go to Kathmandu.

Omicron enters Maharashtra via Delhi as Thane man tests positive
The passenger who is exhibiting mild symptoms, is currently under treatment at a Covid centre in Kalyan-Dombivali. The infectee reached here from Cape Town on November 24 and then complained of low fever but has not exhibited any other symptoms, said the official. Moving swiftly, the Thane health authorities launched a drive and traced 12 of his high-risk contacts and 23 low-risk contacts, but all have tested negative.

Extortion case: Mumbai Police file charge-sheet against Param Bir, others
This is the first charge-sheet filed against Singh -- a former Mumbai Police Commissioner, who was suspended on December 2 -- in the five FIRs lodged against him in Mumbai and Thane. The chargesheet, with evidences and the recorded statements of witnessses, also names sacked cop Sachin Vaze, currently in police custody, and two others in the extortion case filed by a hotelier, Bimal Agarwal.
