Hindi should be an alternative language to English: Shah

Presiding over the 37th meeting of the Parliamentary Official Language Committee, he said "unless we make Hindi flexible by accepting words from other local languages, it will not be propagated". The Home Minister told members that now, 70 per cent of the agenda of the Cabinet is prepared in Hindi and over 22,000 Hindi teachers have been recruited in the eight states of northeast.

Talking about the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi, said, "We are neighbours and close friends. There has been an evolving economic situation as well as other developments in Sri Lanka. To help mitigate the economic situation there, we have extended assistance -- $2.5 billion -- in the past two to three months, including credit facilities for fuel and food, which are most required."
India abstains on resolution suspending Russia from un Human Rights Council

Permanent Representative T.S. Tirumurti said after the vote: "If India has chosen any side, it is the side of peace and it is for an immediate end to violence." He said of the abstention, "We do so for reasons of both substance and process." He said that India abstained because it had reservations about how "due process" was applied to the resolution, while it "unequivocally condemned" the killings in Bucha in Ukraine, which was the impetus for the resolution.
2,105 returned to Kashmir Valley after abrogation of Article 370: MHA

The Ministry said a total of 841 Kashmiri migrants had returned to Kashmir Valley in 2020-21 while 1,264 people went back in 2021-22. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai on Wednesday told the Rajya Sabha that four Kashmiri Pandits among 14 Hindus were killed by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019. Moreover, 34 people belonging to minority communities were killed by the terrorists in the last five years including 11 in 2021.
From drones to lightweight tanks, India bans import of another 101 military items

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday released the third positive indigenisation list of 101 items, comprising major equipment and platforms. The list, notified by the Department of Military Affairs, Ministry of Defence (MoD), lays special emphasis on equipment/systems which are being developed and are likely to translate into firm orders in the next five years.
Fewer people scared of Covid; inflation, unemployment biggest concerns

The survey, conducted immediately after the reported detection of a new variant of Coronavirus in Mumbai, further revealed that fewer people are scared of new variants now as they believe that the government has made sufficient arrangements to handle any crisis situation arising from the new variants.

With 1,033 fresh Covid cases, India sees marginal decline

Following a continuous downward trend, the country's active caseload has declined to 11,639. Active cases now constitute 0.03 per cent of the country's total positive cases. A total of 1,222 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours and the cumulative tally of recovered patients since the beginning of the pandemic is now at 4,24,98,789. Consequently, the country's recovery rate stands at 98.76 per cent.
Defence Ministry to come up with another indigenisation list

The major items in the first list include 155mm/39 Cal ultra-light howitzers, the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk-IA-enhanced indigenised content, conventional submarines, and communication satellites GSAT-7C. The major items in the second list include next generation corvettes, land-based MRSAM weapon system, smart anti-field weapon system (SAAW) Mk-I.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) had last week issued a warning against a new mutant that may be more transmissible than any strain of Covid-19 seen before. 'XE' is a mutant hybrid of the two previous versions of the Omicron variant, BA.1 and BA.2, which spread across the world. It was first detected from the UK on January 19 and since then a few hundred sequences have been reported and confirmed.
